All Japan Koi Show

Congratulations to Scott Jenkins who has taken a Second in variety with his magnificent showa from Marudoh koi farm. The All japan Show is the largest Koi show on the planet. To even have a koi worthy of showing is an acheivement in itself. The Koi will be returning to the Uk in the spring where I am told she will be entered into the Bkks National and the Welsh National. I am looking forward to seeing her again since I persuaded Marudoh to let me buy her, it is not often Showa of this class are purchased in the Uk. You Can see her on a youtube video at this link. Take a look and let me know what you think. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tEYZjQ3OqU
regards
Tony

Forum: Koi Talk

This year’s competition will take place on one day only . This year the following year’s koi are to be judged in the morning and selection of this year’s koi will take place in the afternoon. This new format is at the request of customers and it is felt two days is taking up to much time. This year’s event will take place on Sunday the 12th of June. This year’s tategoi will be showa, a very popular variety. The last time we had showa as our tategoi event it proved to be one of the best. The Koi that returned were absolutely stunning.

For those of you who have not taken part before I will explain the format. You buy a ticket which entitles you to a koi and entrance for two people. The cost also includes free drinks both alcoholic and soft. Also included for two is a well prepared buffet. If you wish to bring more people than is allocated you can purchase another ticket for £15.00 which will allow another person to attend. On the day you will hand your ticket and you will be asked to pick a random number. Once everybody has picked a number a numbered ball is chosen. If this number matches yours, you will be asked to select a Koi. Generally if there are forty tickets sold there will be fifty koi in the vat to choose from. You are allowed to have three koi placed in a bowl of which you can chose one. Once you have made your choice you will then select the next numbered ball simple!

You might be thinking what if I don’t get to chose until towards the end will all the best koi be gone. The answer to this is absolutely not . All the koi are high class tategoi and we always have more koi than participants, in fact Dennis and I chose what we believe to be the top five and more times than not these koi are not chosen until the very end. Sometimes they are not even chosen and have been offered for sale on the condition they are returned the following year.

This Years Ticket price is £350.00 This represents great value not only do you go home with a fantastic Koi , you will be wined and dined and you will be supporting a great event.

To book your ticket you will need to pay a fifty pound deposit and the balance will not be due until April.

Regards
Tony

Forum: Events

Pond build 2006

It all started when my son asked if he could make our goldfish pond deeper to accommodate a few koi that were getting too large for his aquarium. Seemed liked a good idea at the time...dig a hole, put a new liner in, job done. If only! Initial ideas went out of the window and we decided on a block built pond, 5'0" deep and lined with fibreglass. We decided to build the new pond within the confines of the old pond as it was a nice shape and had a stone wall around it which would have been difficult to remove. Unfortunately we discovered a drainage pipe running through the excavation which meant we lost 3'0" off the proposed width and altered the planned shape. This reduced the final water volume to 3000 gallons. At this point we should have scrapped the original pond completely and made the new pond bigger but hindsight is a wonderful thing. All blockwork below ground level is 9" thick whilst blockwork above ground level is 4" thick with a brick facing wall. A nearby greenhouse was adapted as a filter house to accommodate a Nexus 200 Eazy filter, Lacron 24" sand filter and UV filter. The pond was electrically heated but it put an extra £400 on my quarterly bill so I didn't heat it last winter. I decided not to install a skimmer. This might sound strange but I'd heard numerous tales of fish getting caught in wall mounted skimmers so was afraid to risk it - something I now regret. All work (other than fibreglassing) was done by my son and his friend. I was very concerned about Herons because they reduced our goldfish from 70 to 8 in the last pond so we raised the walls 12" above water level and haven't had any problems with herons or cats. I'd have liked to have fitted a pergola but as it would have obscured views of the sea from the house we covered a small area of the pond with decking to provide the fish with shade/shelter. We had a major catastrophe with a GH crash last year and lost most of the fish, including my favourite Asagi, but Tony's advice and treatment saved the rest. At present I'm having problems with water clarity. All parameters are fine but I can't seem to clear suspended matter, particulary small particles of blanket weed - I'll get there eventually.

Forum: Pond & Garden Pics

I disconnected it four months ago & was relying on my nexus unit to clean the pond, but the Kaldnes kept blocking up.
I called in to see tony & he had just the thing, THE CETUS SIEVE.
On the weekend stripped out the sand filter & replaced it with this sieve, Adjusted all the pipework & taken out those Huge electricity eating pumps that are no longer required because no more back washing yippee.
I have installed two Messner pumps that run at 80 watts each, one from the sieve & one from the nexus unit to the pond. saving my self a fortune, this thing should pay for itself.
The results are amazing the debris it collected in one day was shocking. A simple wash of the screen when you want & its gone.
The water clarity is the same as the sand filter without the electricity bill & the maintenance.
